Pollinator Watch: Learn Citizen Science Surveying
Event details
About the event
Would you like to learn how to monitor pollinators and contribute to a UK-wide citizen science project?
Join the Avon Wildlife Trust and Buglife this August for a free citizen science training day. You’ll learn about the different insects groups that pollinate our plants and learn how to conduct FIT Counts (Flower-Insect Timed Counts), 10 minute quadrates recording pollinating insects visiting flowers. We will start with a theory based training session on the survey method and how to identify common species, then move into the field to practice surveying and identifying the insects we see.
If able, please download the free FIT count app from FIT Count app | PoMS before the event to take part.
Kelston Roundhill Barn, near Bath. Please bring a packed lunch, plenty of water and suitable clothing/footwear for outdoor work in hot weather. This is a rural location, so may not be suitable for people with limited mobility. These events are for people 8+ years old, all children MUST be accompanied by an adult.
Do NOT trust Google directions (they’ll take you up the Cullimore’s Lane cul de sac where there is no parking and no turning). Roundhill barn is off grid, with no postal address, no services, no post code. The nearest post code is BA1 9AF.
If you use satnav set it for A431 Kelston and follow the directions below.
From Bath on the A431: just after you see “Bath Soft Cheese” sign and 30mph limit turn right off the A431 on the outskirts of the village of Kelston on the second of two farm tracks (sign reads “Old Barn”);
From Bristol: turn left off A431 just as you leave Kelston, on the first of two farm tracks (sign reads “Old Barn”);
Follow this narrow road straight for 50 yards (do not turn left into our neighbours’ paddock). Enter through the gate at the end, turn left and follow the track for half a mile.
Parking is marked on the right in the second field.
