Weston Big Wood

Precious ancient woodland under threat from the pressure of development

Weston Big Wood nature reserve is a wildlife-rich ancient woodland in Weston-in-Gordano, near Portishead. It is a protected site, designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, that offers fantastic opportunites to connect with nature in an idyllic setting.

Weston Big Wood has faced many challenges over the years, including ash dieback disease, high footfall, and proposed developments. Unfortunately, once again, there are proposals to build on the Green Belt area that protects the Wood, bringing developments within metres of the woodland edge. This would have a significant adverse impact on this irreplaceable ancient woodland.

Our primary concerns are,

There should be no development on the Green Belt area that serves as a buffer for Weston Big Wood, a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Weston Big Wood is an irreplaceable ancient woodland which is in decline due to ash dieback disease and high footfall.

Avon Wildlife Trust is the custodian of Weston Big Wood, working tirelessly to put local nature into recovery in the Wood and beyond. Development in the Green Belt will undo our work and will accelerate the decline of Weston Big Wood.
