Seed Appeal

Imagine turning 10p into £1; £10 into £100; £100 into £1,000...

That’s exactly what we’ve been doing in recent years to find ways to buy land, improve nature reserves and deliver education programmes to local children. For example, in recent years we’ve achieved the following successes:

  • Prior’s Wood

Avon’s best bluebell woodland was purchased in 2005 – our members raised £20,000, which levered in a further £200,000 from Viridor Waste.

  • Recyling naturally

This education project to teach schoolchildren about sustainability and waste was set up in 2006 – our members donated £4,000 to release a further £40,000 from South Gloucestershire Environment Body.

  • Weston Big Wood

Local members raised over £18,000 in match-funding to buy Weston Big Wood in 1999, which, together with £10,000 from another funder, unlocked £125,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund. A further £140,000 was granted in 2005 from the Aggregates Levy to develop community engagement with the woodland and improve public access.

More and more of our funding sources now require match-funding.

Landfill Tax regulations stipulate that 10% of every award is matched by a donation that is from outside the charity, and Heritage Lottery Fund requires partnership funding of 10 - 25%, depending on the size of the award. As we move towards our thirtieth anniversary in 2010, we have an ambitious programme of land purchase and development programmes to match-fund, and we need to raise £40,000 as matched funding towards our 2010 project bids:

Puxton Moor – land purchase that will extend an existing nature reserve - likely to be around £150,000 so we will require £15,000 from our funds.

People and Wildlife – this is our new outreach programme to engage the less advantaged members of our community, who have not traditionally been involved with the natural world. HLF have funded 90%, and around £150,000, and so we still need £16,000 pa.

Brown’s Folly – an urgent limestone grassland restoration project will require £93,000 over 3 years. This project involves capital works (fencing & stock control, water supply improvements, scrub clearance), monitoring, new interpretation and community initiatives. We are applying for a Landfill Tax fund, and so we will need to contribute £9,000.

Can you help make sure that the Trust’s thirtieth anniversary is a year to remember by helping us to build up a Seed Fund to make these projects happen?
