My Wild City Champion: Grenville Johnson

An expert horticulturalist and keen gardener, Grenville is a well known figure when it comes to all things plant. He is an integral part of the 'Bristol in Bloom' movement with his own project 'St.George's in Bloom' receiving the prestigious Gold Pennant from RHS Britain in Bloom South West.

In 2003, Grenville marked his retirement by setting up his own resident's association in St.Georges. Determined at improving the quality of the street where he lived, Grenville wanted to put gardening at the heart of his community.

My favourite urban wildlife moment is seeing the first of the bumblebees awaken in the spring covering the lavender

Working closely with fellow residents of Kensington Road, Grenville helped coordinate the greening of his street including a community wild garden space. Beyond improving the environment, the project has also bonded the community with regular social events such as street parties and gardening days to continue the good work.
